Frequently Asked Questions
-
Rammed earth construction is a sustainable building method where sand, gravel and cement is compacted in layers within temporary forms to create solid, load-bearing walls. Once cured, the result is a strong, thermally efficient structure with a unique natural texture and color.
-
Yes. The descriptor “rammed earth” is a bit of a misnomer as the material is not true “earth” or soil and does not slough off when it becomes wet. The ingredients within the mix, which includes a waterproofing agent, are more closely aligned with conventional concrete. When compacted the rammed earth hardens to meet the same specifications as concrete. There is no reason not to build rammed earth in the Pacific Northwest’s cool, damp climate. They regulate indoor temperatures naturally and resist mold, pests, and moisture.
-
Rammed earth homes generally cost more upfront than conventional builds due to its specialized labor requirements. However, an important consideration is rammed earth walls eliminate the need for a variety of construction phases. For example, rammed earth walls do not need to be sided, painted or sheetrocked. Rammed earth also offer long-term savings through energy efficiency, low maintenance, and durability. As always, each project varies - contact us to discuss specifics.

Rammed earth homes are:
Sustainable and eco-friendly
Fire-resistant and pest-resistant
Highly energy-efficient due to thermal mass and air tightness
Low maintenance with long lifespan
Beautiful, with natural, earthy aesthetics
-
Yes. We would love to increase knowledge of and demand for rammed earth homes and other sustainable construction techniques in and around Bellingham.
-
When properly designed rammed earth homes can last for centuries. Many historical structures built with this technique remain standing today around the world. In fact, portions of the great wall of China were built using rammed earth.
-
Absolutely. Rammed earth uses locally sourced, natural materials with minimal processing. It has a low carbon footprint, and its high thermal mass reduces the need for mechanical heating and cooling.
-
Some counties may require additional engineering documentation or code compliance for alternative building methods like rammed earth. We will assist you through the permitting process to ensure compliance with local building codes and can connect you with architects and engineers with specific rammed earth experience.

Passive House is a high-performance building standard focused on energy efficiency, comfort, and sustainability. It emphasizes airtightness, superior insulation, and heat recovery ventilation to dramatically reduce energy use.
-
Unlike traditional homes, Passive House designs work specifically to reduce energy waste through continuous insulation, airtight envelope, mechanical ventilation, building orientation and cohesion with the natural world. The result is a home that is easy to heat and easy to cool with minimal energy use.
-
Yes. Rammed earth's thermal mass pairs well with Passive House principles. With thoughtful design, it’s possible to achieve both energy performance and natural aesthetics in one structure.
-
We focus on residential remodels and custom homes… including ADUs, additions, garages, kitchen and bathroom remodels, and sustainable builds like rammed earth with Passive House principles.
-
Yes. We love remodeling kitchens and bathrooms. Whether you're updating layouts, finishes, or functionality, we bring craftsmanship and attention to detail to every job.
-
Yes. ADUs are a popular way to expand living space, generate rental income, or create multigenerational housing. These are the perfect projects for us, bring your own architect or we can connect you with one.
-
A remodel updates or reconfigures existing space (like a kitchen or bathroom), while an addition creates new square footage (like a new bedroom or garage). We’re experienced in both and can help you determine what’s best for your needs.
-
Just give us a call or send a message through our contact form. We’ll schedule a conversation to learn about your goals, offer guidance, and walk you through next steps from design to build.
